I have been involved in gold work embroidery for over 30 years and have been involved in textiles since I was about 10 years old, dressmaking at 14 and tailoring by the time I was 24. Upholstery and many other crafts and learning whatever was on offer. After getting married and having children I went back to college to study for City & Guilds in embroidery and Design which I gained over a 5 year period, (two years of which I spent on a goldwork banner with a very strict and inspirational tutor called Olive Fawcett). “And” just because I could; at 50 I sat C&G again to familiarise myself with modern techniques to learn how to burn, shred, fray, and paint fabrics with anything I could find and NOT to have straight edges any more, much against the grain, this became a great help with my textiles.
Being an embroiderer’s guild member for many years under three different names, I became a recommended tutor. My greatest accolade was when I won the Coats Anchor award at two of the big shows and was voted the most popular piece by the public. I enjoy organizing classes and lecturing with my daughter Sarah, passing my knowledge on to her and all the people we meet.
I am the founder member of “The Rhuddlan Gold Work group” we have been together since 2000 and have exhibited at many venues “the Madeira show, Olympia, The Houses of Parliament, Voirey, and Rhyll art gallery”. We love working together and hopefully we will be putting pieces of our work on the web site Gallery to be changed every few weeks, along with Sarah’s group “the Golden Wonders” to encourage and inspire.
