Leather needle.

This needle is ideal for sewing down the leather, as it has a triangular shaped point instead of the usual round needle shape, this means it slices through the leather instead of pushing into it.

History of needles.

The first ever needles were made of flint and then bone which could be made alot smaller that flint. Sewing was mainly primative being larger holes through skin.

The oldest iron sewing needle was found in Germany dating back to 300 B.C. But the Egyptians made then from silver, copper and bronze before this.

Needle making came over to England in around the 17th Century and it was a small cottage industry, run by families, the majority of these needlemakers were in the town of Redditch.

Although the cottage industry of needle making has gone, our needles are still manufactured in the UK.
