Product Review:
Chatelaines or scissors keepers

Our Black Enamel Amulet Necklace with Scissors. These are also known as a chatelaine.

It is an excellent way to keep your scissors to hand. They have a small pair of ETUI scissors in them, which are very sharp with a fine point that make them isdeal for snipping away at threads that are harder to get at.

The scissors keeper itself is made from silver with a shiny black enamel inlay, which is an unusual design.

This type of appendage stems from chatelaines, which was an ornament or keys worn by a lady at the waist.

These are end of line and so we are selling them for a bargain price of £10.00 instead of the usual £15.00

What is a “ Chatelaine “ ? A Chatelaine is an ornamental appendage worn by ladies at their waist such as keys, glasses, handbags and purses. The sewing chatelaine was very popular during the reign of Queen Victoria from about 1850 and disappeared round about 1904 when fashion changed and skirts were no longer full and long.

The dictionary states the word “ chatelaine “ in the context of ‘ lady of the castle ‘ dates back to 1196. As a name for a waist hung ornament , the earliest date given is 1845.

La châtelaine de couture fut très appréciée sous le règne de la Reine Victoria à partir de 1850 environ et disparut vers1904, lorsque la mode changea et que les jupes ne se portèrent plus aussi longues ni aussi volumineuses.
